Acapulco Attractions

Acapulco Cliff DiversIf you want the experience of a bustling city that's in an exotic location miles away from home, look no further than Acapulco. The La Quebrada Cliff Divers demonstrate death-defying thrills worthy of a major Cirque du Soleil show in a ritual that feels as though you're hidden away on an island paradise. Downtown Acapulco features historical sites, a museum and public artwork. If you're walking through Costera, take the whole family to Papagayo Park, which captures the excitement and feel of a county fair. One of Acapulco's hidden gems, La Casa de la Cultura, features a museum, art gallery and handmade crafts. Despite Acapulco's city feel, you can still enjoy thrilling adventures, like bungee jumping in Costera or hiking in Bravo Town, which is less than a one-hour drive from the city.

La Quebrada Cliff Divers
Location:
Best watched from a view platform at the Hotel El Mirador, Plazoleta La Quebrada 74 Col. Centro, Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico 39300

The iconic image of Acapulco is of a lone cliff diver leaping off a rocky precipice into a perfectly timed wave. The famous cliff divers of La Quebrada still do their thing every day starting at 12:30 p.m., diving a magnificent 130 feet into the shallow pool below. They return at night, this time carrying flaming torches.

The dives are the biggest attraction in town, so get there early or grab a seat at the Hotel El Mirador, where you will have spectacular unobstructed views and get great pictures. The divers free-climb the rocks before they jump into the water below. Seeing these athletes effortlessly move up the face of the cliff is a show in itself. Before the jumps, which occur from several different heights with two divers leaping from the very top, these daredevils pray at a small altar on the top of the cliff. Admission to the viewing area is only a few dollars, and for an additional fee, you can sit at Hotel El Mirador and enjoy two drinks. After the diving performance, which lasts about 30 minutes, you will be able to meet the divers at the Hotel El Mirador entrance. Be sure to tip these fearless -- and very young -- divers.

Downtown Acapulco

If you want to immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle in the heart of the city, visit downtown Acapulco. Make sure to stop by the main square, Zócalo. Filled with an abundance of trees, this plaza offers plenty of touristy activities. Across from Zócalo, you'll see Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, one of the country's most unusual looking churches.

Just a short walk from Zócalo, the San Diego Fort offers plenty of history. Built in 1616, this fort includes a museum. Exhibits are spread within the building's hallways. Displays include relics, a light and sound show, and much more. While you're in downtown, check out Hotel Los Flamingos, an old resort John Wayne and Frank Sinatra once frequented. Before you leave, make sure to see the 60-foot-long mural created by the late Diego Rivera. This famed artist spent a year and a half creating the fascinating artwork, which includes tiles, seashells and stones.
