The biggest attractions on the little island of Cozumel are all underwater. They're the coral reefs. Divers come back year after year to explore them. In fact, Cozumel is known the world over for being a top-notch diving and snorkeling destination. It got an enormous public relations boost back in the early '60s, thanks to beloved nature lover, underwater explorer and TV host Jacques Cousteau. He did a documentary on Cozumel that featured extraordinary images of the tropical fish, graceful reefs, clear aquamarine waters and white sand beaches.
Besides diving and snorkeling, Cozumel offers many other water sports for marine enthusiasts. For example, the fishing is world-class. There are highly experienced captains and guides who lead groups of all sizes on charter trips. Deep sea anglers often come to Cozumel to catch billfish. The large fish with long, sword-like bills are abundant from March through July. Grouper, barracuda, snapper, mackerel, amberjack and wahoo can be caught at any time of the year. Bonefishing is also popular in Cozumel. It involves a lot of wading and takes place in the flats around the island.
Some other ways to have fun in the sun in Cozumel include paddling kayaks, riding wave runners or jet skis and going sailing. There are plenty of marinas that offer rentals, along with opportunities for waterskiing, parasailing and windsurfing. Visitors can also take advantage of Cozumel's exotic locale to enjoy unusual experiences like swimming with dolphins or riding in a submarine. Plus, the evening cruises, which feature the most colorful and breathtaking sunsets anywhere, are not to be missed.
Diving or snorkeling in Cozumel is sublime. Situated in the Caribbean Sea, the island flaunts a coral reef system that is almost as grand and complex as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. There are more than 40 dive sites in the vicinity. The most popular ones are the Barracuda Reef, Chankanaab Park, Colombia Reef, Maracaibo Reef, Palancar Caves, Paraíso Reef, San Francisco Wall and Santa Rosa Wall. The reefs and caves have a magical, garden-like landscape, and the walls can drop for 3,000 feet to the ocean floor. A variety of marine life also thrives in these beautiful formations. Since the water around Cozumel is so clear, visibility for divers and snorkelers often stretches for 100 feet.
Countless dive shops operate on the island offering everything from equipment rentals to introductory through advanced instruction. Two-tank guided dive trips are available in the mornings and afternoons, and there are special twilight and night dive trips as well. The dive shops have divemasters on staff who help make sure visitors have a safe and fun diving experience. Most dive packages include training, equipment, drinks, lunch and transportation to and from the marinas.

Cozumel is a fisherman’s paradise. Its waters are swarming with some of the most exciting sport fishing in the world. Along with deep sea fishing, anglers can attempt bottom fishing, which is normally done by drifting offshore and dropping a line straight down to the ocean floor. Red snapper and triggerfish are usually caught this way. Fly fishing is also available in Cozumel on the northern tip of the island where there are three lush lagoons – each one an ideal habitat for the elusive bonefish. Private and group charters can be arranged for four, six or eight hours. Most operators will provide all the necessary fishing equipment, a fishing license, bait, transportation to and from the marina, beer, soft drinks, water, lunch and snacks. Plus, they’ll often clean and fillet the day’s catch.
