Playa del Carmen, a once-sleepy resort town that now boasts a cosmopolitan vibe, has lots to offer those who want to take the plunge. Situated between tourist-heavy Cancun and the tranquil Riviera Maya, it's the perfect base for a Mexican Caribbean vacation -- and one that lures water enthusiasts with an eclectic array of activities.
Of course, the scuba diving in Playa del Carmen is simply phenomenal. This is because the Caribbean Sea features more diversity beneath its surface than almost any other body of water in the world. Warm year-round, it's packed with marine life and magnificent coral formations. Plus, the area's dive sites lie along the Great Maya Reef, the second largest reef in the world, and are suited for all skill levels.
Along with the fabulous undersea world, visitors can explore Playa del Carmen's mysterious inland cenotes. Found only on the Yucatán Peninsula, cenotes were thought by the Maya to be sacred entrances to the underworld. In reality, they are freshwater sinkholes formed by underground rivers when the roof of a cavern collapses, usually due to erosion. When cenotes are accessible to humans, the diving, snorkeling and swimming experiences they offer are out of this world.
Snorkeling with whale sharks is another popular activity near Playa del Carmen. From May to early September, these giant, slow-moving fish come to Isla Holbox and other spots along the Yucatán Peninsula to spend their summers.
Visitors never sit around and wonder what to do in between dives. There are fascinating eco-parks and water sports galore in Playa del Carmen -- including boat rentals, sunset cruises, jungle tours and the chance to swim with dolphins, which is a favorite choice for kids.
Although the shimmering Caribbean Sea is reason enough for divers to come to Playa del Carmen, the area offers another impressive natural attraction – the cenotes. Dive shops can equip visitors for both activities. Ocean diving tours are more common, but there are many experienced cavern guides who lead trips to the cenotes as well. In fact, the entire Yucatán Peninsula is dotted with an intricate cave system that is breathtaking to explore. The experience is impossible to describe in words or with photos – it’s just something visitors must do!

Some of the Yucatán Peninsula’s best sport fishing is available in Playa del Carmen. This surprises many visitors because the area is so well known for its diving. One of the reasons the fishing is so good is that the channel between Playa del Carmen’s coast and Cozumel generates something a “fish superhighway.” Thus, big fish often come closer to the shore than they normally would – and anglers can start prepping their bait as soon as they leave the marina. Sailfish are one of the main targets for fishermen. They are abundant from March to July. There are also plenty of marlin in the waters surrounding Playa del Carmen.
